As most of you know, I try to help the environment where I can. I buy products with as little plastic packaging as possible, I eat vegetarian and mostly plant-based, we use paper straws and reusable bags and have a compost system at home. Of course, I still have a long way to go, and that’s why I was so excited when The Bamboo Brush Society wanted to collaborate with me!
Did you know that we use 5 billion plastic toothbrushes every year? And did you know that about 2 billion of those brushes end up on landfills and in oceans? That’s a lot of plastic… The solution? A biodegradable toothbrush.
The Bamboo Brush Society makes toothbrushes and cotton buds out of, you guessed it, bamboo. Bamboo is one of the most sustainable and versatile materials on our planet. It grows faster than Usain Bolt runs and doesn’t need any fertilizers. The trees are used almost entirely and The Bamboo Brush Society is only using 1% of the available amount.
The handle is made from 100% sustainable bamboo and can be put in your home compost or in a commercial composting bin. The bristles are made from Nylon 6 and are not biodegradable. The only biodegradable material available today is pig hair, but that is no option for The Bamboo Brush Society, because they are also a vegan brand. So, when throwing out your toothbrush, don’t forget to remove the bristles!
“But what about the panda’s?”, I hear you think (I thought the exact same thing)!
The panda eats 42 species of Bamboo. However, the bamboo used in these brushes (Moso Bamboo) grows up to 28 meters high, so the leaves are out of the panda’s reach.
I am super excited about this brand and the work they’re doing to help our planet. Check out their website and read more about their story if you’re interested. You can buy your own bamboo toothbrush and cotton buds on their website as well!
