Emilie In DC: Week 4

February 19, 2017

Week 4 in D.C. is over and it was filled with firsts for me!

On Monday, as you guys already know, I visited the National Museum of American History. This was my first time visiting a museum by myself! I saw Abe Lincoln’s famous hat, Dorothy’s shoes, the original Star Spangled Banner and learned so much about this country!

Tuesday was Valentine’s Day and that’s a big day in the States. Everyone celebrates it, even if your single (aka me). When I woke up and opened my door, I saw this Valentine’s gift from Hélène, the lady with whom I’m staying. I thought it was so sweet, figuratively and literally (yes, I went there). For dinner, we went to the food court again and I got a burrito bowl at Chipotle. It was so good. I had never gotten Chipotle food before, so this was a first as well.

On Wednesday, we got these really cool bags at C-SPAN, where I’m interning. We, the interns, also had lunch with Brian Lamb and Susan Swain, founder and co-CEO of C-SPAN. They were so nice, asked us questions about ourselves and then we got some time to ask them questions as well. I also had my first ever Girl Scout Cookie. They’re called Dosidos and they’re filled with peanut butter. I could’ve eaten the entire package. I didn’t.

On Thursday night, I went to see Newsies: The Movie all by myself. Newsies is a Broadway musical. They taped it in September and you could go see it in cinemas for three days. I’m so happy I got to see it. The songs are amazing (thanks Alan Menken) and it had some of my favorite Broadway actors in it. Musical theatre geek over here. After the movie, I took my first ever Uber ride home.

Also, I BOOKED MY FIRST TICKET TO GO SEE A BROADWAY MUSICAL. ON BROADWAY. Sorry, all-caps are necessary. After booking my ticket to go see Anastasia on Broadway, I almost cried. I loved the movie and I always told my mom that I wanted to produce the Broadway version of that film. Sadly, someone was one jump ahead of me but I don’t really mind because I’M GOING TO SEE IT. Okay, I’m calm now.

On Friday, I kind of freaked out when I saw this. You guys know that I’m writing for goedgevoel.be, a Belgian online magazine. But guess what? On Friday, they actually featured me on their Instagram. I think it’s fair to admit I screamed into my pillow for a minute.

On Saturday, we went to go explore some more. This time, we went exploring in Shaw. It’s an upcoming neighborhood, even though their history goes way back. At the end of our day, we got chili dogs at Ben’s Chili Bowl, a famous chili diner. Even Obama, Jimmy Fallon and The Rock have been there on several occasions. This was my first time trying a chili dog and I absolutely understand their success. Whoever decided to combine chili and hot dogs is a genius. I’ll upload a blog post about our entire experience in a couple of days, so you can see some more pictures then!
